VLC Media Player

Videos may come in an unfamiliar format, for which you would need another media player. If you don't want to keep multiple media players on your computer, then you should turn to VLC Media Player. It provides support for countless media formats, including ones you may never heard of and it is available for multiple platforms, including Mac OS X. The player is lightweight and very easy to use, but it still provides enough features to satisfy all your needs and to make movie watching a pleasant experience.

VLC's user interface is divided into several sections, in which you can manage your media library, access videos, music and pictures from local folders and from the local network and play various contents on the Internet, like podcasts, free music, radio streams and more. These sections can be accessed through a series of navigation tabs, located on the left side of the window. You only need to double click a media file to play it. Videos can be played on the same interface or on a separate window. The playback controls are available at all times, on the bottom edge of the interface, so you can play local or streaming audio without making any changes to the window's layout.

The application provides support for video and audio playback from other sources as well. Besides single media files, with or without subtitles, it can also play a second file synchronously. Furthermore, you can use VLC to play media files directly from a disc and it can also capture video and audio feeds from external devices. The general settings menu includes a vast range of options, for tweaking the video and audio playback, making various changes to the interface's behavior, customizing subtitles, hotkeys and more.
